Author Resources

These lists are not exhaustive and will be added to. The Associations and Conferences have a UK bias because, plain and simple, this is where I live.

Writers' Associations:

Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society - if your paper-printed work has an ISBN you should be a member
Crime Writers' Association - runs the Dagger awards
Historical Novel Society - for readers and writers
Romantic Novelists' Association - runs the RNA awards
Society of Authors
Writers' Guild

UK Writers' Conferences

Arvon - a renowned charitable organisation with venues around the UK offering year round courses.
Writers' Summer School, Swanwick - August
Writers' Conference, Winchester - June
Writers' Holiday, Wales - February & July in Fishguard
Writers' Workshop Festival, York - September

Going Indie:

If you believe it's easy, read my article on this blog Going Indie with an Ebook?
Catherine, Caffeinated - very good information website - check the links.

It's Better to Beware:

Vanity Publishing Info - starry-eyed? Read Jonathan Clifford first.
Writer Beware - highlighting the thin end of the wedge.

Improve Your Skills:

Pro Writing Aid - free online editing software. Paste in a section and get automated reports on your word usage, cliches, style, diction... Ideal for flagging sloppy writing. There's a paid version, too.
The Grammarist - check yours here.

E-Reading Apps:

Reading an ebook on a non-ereading device - computer, smartphone, tablet? Then you'll need one of these free apps:
Amazon Kindle ebooks (Kindle4PC, Kindle4Mac, etc)
Adobe Digital Editions (for reading all ePub formatted ebooks)

  1. Thank you for mentioning Writers Holiday. However, from this year both February and the July events are to be held at Fishguard.

    Many thanks,
